A warm welcome awaits you at Blackdown Nursing Home. We provide Residential and Nursing Care for the elderly, specifically tailored to individual needs. Our well trained team of carers and nurses has extensive experience in the care for people affected by dementia. The home is laid out to assist residents with first class facilities and ensure a stimulating and personal approach to care in a secure and safe environment.
Blackdown Nursing Home is situated in the small town of Mary Tavy, approximately 4 miles North of Tavistock on the A386 to Okehampton (map). The home lies off the main road, on a quiet and elevated site on Gibbet Hill that faces the Blackdown Hills and Tors of Dartmoor. This rural position offers tranquillity and peace throughout the year. Seasons can be admired to the full and our extensive gardens attract a wealth of wildlife. There is a thriving village community, a Parish Council, a shop/post office and two good pubs nearby. A short ten minutes drive will get you to Tavistock. There is also a regular bus service towards Tavistock, Brentor and Okehampton.
The full history of the home is unknown but it has flourished from a small building dating back to World War II and it probably started as Nursing Home in the sixties. Several extensions were done in the seventies and eighties to enable it to accommodate 33 residents. The current owners bought Blackdown in 2002 and have since undertaken further extensions, including the addition of two conservatories and a shaft lift. A patio was extended outside Sunflower lounge in 2017. This work was done to improve the communal facilities of the home and enhance the comfort and well-being of our clients. Bulbs and flowers are planted and tended throughout the year offering a stunning view, especially during the spring bloom.
We have regular activities in the lounges, planned outings and musical entertainment. The gardens offer the unique opportunity for a stroll outside in the warm and sunny days and the summer house is a perfect spot for a quiet cup of tea.
