Blackdown Nursing Home is to be found to the North of a small village of Mary Tavy, approximately 4 miles North of Tavistock on the A386 to Okehampton. Driving through the village it can be easily missed as the home lies in grounds set behind a row of Bungalows that face the road, situated on an elevated site on Gibbet Hill looking over to the Blackdown Hills and Torrs of Dartmoor. ( Please see Map on the Contact Us Page ).

Its rural position offers tranquillity and peace throughout the year. The seasons can be seen to the full and enjoyed and also the wealth of wildlife that also lives there. Five to ten minutes in the car sees one in Tavistock but there is a regular bus service through the village and onto  Brentor and Okehampton. There is a thriving village community, Parish Council, now only one village shop/ post office and two good Pubs.

The full history of the home is unknown but has grown from a small building that was here during the past war and started as Nursing Home possibly in the sixties. Several extensions were done in the seventies and eighties to enable it to accommodate 33 clients. For many years the owners lived in Blackdown House adjoining the grounds, this is now not the case. Blackdown has been further  extended during our ownership, that is from 2002 to date, during which time the addition of two conservatories and a shaft lift have been constructed. This work was done to improve the communal facilities of the home and comfort and well being offered to our clients. Work on the gardens is continual but we are planning further relayout and gradually replanted in 2014.

There is plenty for our residents to enjoy inside and out depending upon the weather. Activities in the lounges or summerhouse or a walk in the garden. It is easy for family and friends to find a quiet area tp spend time with their loved ones.
